CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS As Advanced Chemistry students, we expect:
• Respect for peers and the teacher by paying attention, being ready to learn, following the rules, and being good listeners
• Enjoy a friendly learning environment
• To be given the necessary learning tools in order to pass the class
• To be given a simple understanding of basic chemistry
• A safe lab environment
• That everyone attempts to do their own work and ask for help as needed
• Have fun while learning in a hard-working environment
Assessment:
Students and parents have access to grades on Skyward at any time. Students will occasionally work in groups or pairs, but each student will be assessed independently.
Grading:
20% Labs
20% Homework (homework quizzes)
45% Tests
15% Participation (Openers, Notebooks)
HOMEWORK will be assigned throughout each week and will mainly consist of in-class activities and problem-solving. Homework quizzes will be given each Monday. Homework grades will be based solely off homework quizzes. If all homework is turned in by the end of the school day on Monday, you will be given the opportunity to retake a homework quiz if your original score is below an 80%. The maximum retake score is 80%. All retakes must be taken by the end of the week.
TESTS: If a student scores lower than an 80%, he/she may retake the test if he/she has: 1. all homework completed, 2. no missing assignments, AND 3. turned in a retake ticket.
The retake has to be scheduled within one week of receiving the test score and the maximum retake score is 80%. However, if the student chooses to complete an additional extension level assessment, they may score up to a 100%.
If a student scores an 80% or higher (and has no missing assignments AND has turned in a retake ticket), he/she may take an extension level assessment to receive up to a 100%.
NOTEBOOKS are required for this class. Each student will have his/her own composition notebook. Everything will go into this notebook. Notebooks will be turned in for a grade.
CLASSROOM MATERIALS: composition notebook, 4-6 glue sticks
WISH LIST: Tissue box, distilled water
SCHOOL-WIDE TARDY POLICY
Tardy #1: Warning
Tardy #2: 15 min detention and parent notification
Tardy #3, 4, 5: 45 min detention and parent notification
Tardy #6: ISS pending parent/student meeting with assistant principal
Tardy #7: ISS and/or loss of privileges
LAB REPORTS are due one week from the date you complete the lab. Each student will prepare and turn in individual lab reports.
ABSENCES should be reported to me as soon as possible, and any make-up work should be labeled as such. If you are gone for an excused absence, you will have one week to make up the work you missed. There will be no credit given on the day of an unexcused absence. As per school policy, a student who is beyond 30 minutes tardy to class shall be considered unexcused. For every unexcused absence to class a student shall attend 45 minutes of Extended Learning Time. A student shall have one week from the assignment to meet this obligation. If that time is not served, it will double. Parents will be notified by the office when students have an unexcused absence. If a student is unexcused for more than two class periods in a day, the student will serve an ISS.
